Buffy’s mother, Joyce Summers (Kristine Sutherland), falls victim to a vampire’s capture. In the subsequent scene, she is bound to a chair and tightly gagged with a white cloth. The vampire proceeds to take numerous photographs of her while she remains restrained in the chair.

Later on, Buffy enters the room where the pictures are displayed on the wall, adding a poignant detail to the scene. As Buffy discovers her mother, Joyce engages in some muffled speech (gag-talk) due to the gag before eventually being freed. Although her feet are not shown in the scene, viewers witness Buffy untying some ropes lower down, just off-camera.
